What Is Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral Therapy is one of the more gentle yet powerful complementary health therapies. While many people think that Craniosacral Therapy is for back pain, headaches, head trauma and other complaints, it is actually not only successful in treating a range of health disorders it taps into the body’s capacity to heal from within. Founding therapist William Sutherland, an osteopathic practitioner in the early 1900’s, discovered that gentle manipulations and adjustments at the sutures of the cranium, sacrum, and tailbone, released tension from the membranes. This release manifested over the entire system and allowed the body to self-correct.
Craniosacral Therapy is underpinned by the belief that we are born with an underlying infinite order of intelligence or “vital force” energy (often referred to as” chi” in Chinese Medicine). This is the same intelligence that keeps your heart beating and your body functioning. This constant ‘intelligence’ is carried by the nervous system to every cell in your body supplying it with all the information it needs to function on a day to day basis. This is considered innate Intelligence, one that heals the body and is always with you!
If every cell in your body is functioning at 100% then you will have optimal health. Unfortunately structural imbalances and spinal misalignments can interfere with the transmission of this innate intelligence, causing imbalance and altered cell formation that in time can create many health problems and disease. The main job of a Craniosacral Therapist then, is to help correct structural imbalances in the human body allowing the innate intelligence to go where it needs to go and to restore impeded circulation, alleviate any nerve impingement and thus allowing dysfunctional cells to heal themselves. The power that made your body can heal your body.
In this way, Craniosacral Therapy helps to turn on your healing power and creates optimal health. This modality uses gentle, fluid movements of the bones and tissues of the head, thorax, and hips to enhance the flow of cerebrospinal fluid. Imbalances are corrected in the central nervous system between the cranium and the sacrum, resetting the body’s natural healing potential.
This therapy does not involve any spinal manipulations or adjustments but focuses on the use of Light-touch therapies to align the structural integrity of the body that is the root cause of many structural and spinal imbalances. The Craniosacral Therapist therefore may employ a number of techniques from different healing modalities to assist in rebalancing the integrity of the body. Techniques may include, but are not limited to: Myofascial Release Therapy, Positional Release Therapy, Muscle Energy technique Therapy, Polarity Therapy or Acupressure.Craniosacral therapy can be done with the client clothed or unclothed.
The benefits of treatment include improvement of nervous system function, reduction of stress, deep muscular relaxation, support of the immune system, and overall enhancement of health. A greater sense of calm, clarity, and connectedness are often experienced after a craniosacral session.
